The Zao Echo Line is a scenic mountain road that stretches about 26 kilometers, connecting Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture to Kaminoyama in Yamagata Prefecture. This route crosses the Zao mountain range at an elevation of around 1,600 meters, offering spectacular seasonal views—from snow walls in spring to lush greenery in summer and vibrant autumn foliage.
One of the highlights along the route is the famous Okama Crater Lake, known for its emerald green color and stunning beauty.
Recommended Section
We recommend riding from the Miyagi side (Togatta Onsen) up to the Zao summit (Okama) and then down to Kaminoyama in Yamagata:
- On the Miyagi side, you can enjoy the snow corridor in spring.
- Use the Zao High Line (toll road) to get closer to the Okama crater.
- The Yamagata side features scenic curves—great for motorcycle touring.
Road Conditions & Safety

- Fully paved and well maintained, with two lanes throughout.
- As a mountain road, it includes sharp curves and steep slopes.
- Temperatures can be quite low even in summer—bring warm clothing.
- Closed in winter due to snow, usually from early November to late April.
