Route Overview

The Kamikōchi Norikura Forest Road (officially: Nagawagawa–Azumi Line and Kamikōchi Norikura Super Forest Road) is a scenic mountain route in Nagano Prefecture, stretching approximately 35.1 km from Nagawa Onsen (Kurokawado) to Azumi (near the Kamikōchi entrance at Nakanoyu).

The road is divided into three sections:

  • Section A: Nagawa Onsen → Norikura Highlands (approx. 15.3 km)
  • Section B: Norikura Highlands → Shirahone Onsen (approx. 6.7 km)
  • Section C: Shirahone Onsen → Nakanoyu (approx. 13.1 km)

Note: Section C is currently closed due to bridge damage from an avalanche, and has been inaccessible for several years as of 2025.
The entire road has been toll-free since 2008, and offers magnificent alpine scenery across different elevations.

Recommended Route

The best riding experience is found on Section A (Nagawa Onsen to Norikura Highlands) or Section B (Norikura to Shirahone Onsen).
Section A features steadily climbing curves with panoramic views as you ascend.
Please note that Section C remains closed, so complete through-routes are not currently possible.

Road Conditions & Safety

The entire route is paved but narrow in many sections, with steep gradients, sharp curves, and several long tunnels.
This is a typical mountain road, requiring cautious driving.
There are also rockfall warning zones, and winter closures are in effect from mid-November to late April.
Always check road conditions in advance due to frequent weather-related changes.

Places to Stop

  • Norikura Highlands: A resort area around 1,500m elevation with hiking, waterfalls, and hot springs.
  • Shirahone Onsen: Famous for its milky-white sulfur springs, nestled in a quiet valley.
  • Nakanoyu Onsen: A popular inn near Kamikōchi entrance, great for pre- or post-hike relaxation.
  • Michi-no-Eki Nagawa: A roadside station serving local buckwheat noodles and souvenirs.
  • Kamikōchi: A pristine mountain valley accessible only by bus, taxi, or on foot—no private vehicle entry is allowed.

Local Food

Nagawa is known for handmade Tōji soba, where soba noodles are dipped in hot broth at the table.
Other nearby areas offer regional set meals, hot spring cuisine, and occasional terrace cafés in summer.
Dining options are often tied to local inns or small restaurants.

Fees & Access

The road is free of charge (since 2008).
Access examples:

  • From Matsumoto IC (Nagano Expressway): about 70 minutes to Nagawa Onsen
  • Kamikōchi: Park at Sawatari or Sawando and use a shuttle bus (required for access, no private vehicles allowed)

Best Season & Weather

June to October is the prime season.

  • Early summer offers fresh greenery
  • Autumn (early to mid-October) is famous for spectacular foliage
  • Even in summer, temperatures are cool due to the altitude
Winter closure is in effect due to snow and ice, making the road impassable from November to April.
