Tsumagoi Panorama Line

Route Overview

The Tsumagoi Panorama Line is a scenic road stretching about 30 km through Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture. It is divided into two sections: the North Route and the South Route. Running through highlands over 1,000 meters above sea level, the road offers vast views of cabbage fields and Mount Asama. It’s also a popular summer getaway.

Recommended Section

The South Route, from Aisai-no-Oka to Route 59, is especially recommended. It features gentle curves with open views of farmland and mountains. The North Route offers higher elevations and a more mountainous atmosphere.

Road Conditions and Safety

The entire route is paved and generally wide, making it easy to drive or ride. However, be cautious of fog and sharp curves. The road is closed during winter (from mid-November to late April) due to snow.

Places to Stop

  • Aisai-no-Oka (Lovers’ Hill): A popular photo spot with panoramic views of Mount Asama and the surrounding fields.
  • Tsumagoi Farm: Offers soft-serve ice cream and animal encounters.
  • Lake Baragi: A relaxing place for a walk or rest by the lakeside.

Local Food

Tsumagoi is famous for cabbage, and you can enjoy dishes such as cabbage ramen, cabbage croquettes, and local craft beer made with highland ingredients.

Fees and Access

The road is toll-free. Access is about 90 minutes from either the Usui-Karuizawa IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway or the Shibukawa-Ikaho IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway.

Best Season and Weather

Late June to mid-October is the best season. Summer offers cool temperatures, and the autumn foliage in October is beautiful.
