Route Overview
The Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline is a toll mountain road in Aomori Prefecture that climbs from Hirosaki City to the 8th station of Mt. Iwaki. Stretching about 9.3 km, the road features 69 sharp curves that twist dramatically up the mountainside, offering an exciting drive or motorcycle ride up one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains.
Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Tsugaru Plain, the Sea of Japan, and—on clear days—even Hokkaido in the distance. It’s considered one of the most scenic mountain drives in the Tohoku region.
Recommended Riding Section
Iwaki Skyline Gate → 8th Station Parking Lot (Approx. 9.3 km)
The highlight is the steep, winding section near the top. In autumn, vibrant leaves form a colorful tunnel, making it one of the best fall foliage routes in northern Japan.
