Tateshina skyline

This article introduces the Tateshina Skyline and Venus Line, a scenic motorcycle touring route that stretches from Chino City to Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture.
Covering a total distance of approximately 76 km, the route winds through highland areas at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 meters.
It is one of Japan’s most famous mountain roads, offering stunning views of lush forests, lakes, and even the distant Japanese Alps.

Recommended Riding Section

The most scenic and enjoyable section is from Shirakaba Lake to the Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum on the Venus Line.
This stretch features panoramic views, open meadows, and flowing curves that are a joy to ride.
Traffic is light on weekday mornings, making it a peaceful and exhilarating experience.

Road Conditions & Safety Notes

The road is generally wide (6 meters or more) and well-paved.
However, due to the high elevation, fog, wind, and sudden weather changes can occur.
Expect many curves and elevation changes; speed limits range from 30–50 km/h.
Ride cautiously in rainy or foggy conditions.

Both the Tateshina Skyline and Venus Line are toll-free.
Rental bikes are available in Chino City and Ueda City, with 250cc and larger bikes starting at around ¥5,000 per day (advance booking recommended).

Best Season & Climate

The best time to ride is from late May to mid-October.
Even in summer, the cool highland air makes for a pleasant ride.
Autumn (September–October) offers stunning fall foliage.
Be aware that roads may close due to snow from November onward.

Dining & Rest Stops

Along the route, you’ll find rest spots like Tateshina Lake Rest House and Venus Terrace at Kirigamine.
Highland milk desserts and dishes made with local vegetables are popular.
Both solo riders and groups are warmly welcomed at most eateries.

Access Information

Chino City can be reached in about 20 minutes by car from the Suwa IC on the Chuo Expressway.
From Shinjuku, the limited express train to Chino Station takes around 2 hours.
Rental bike shops are available near Chino Station (booking required).
While public transport is possible, self-riding or renting locally is ideal for touring.
