Route Overview
The Shiga Kusatsu Road connects Shiga Highlands in Nagano Prefecture and Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture.
It is part of National Route 292 and is also called the Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route.
The road is about 45 km long and goes over mountains as high as 2,172 meters, the highest point of any national road in Japan.
You can enjoy views of forests, volcanoes, and wide mountain skies. It is open from spring to autumn.
Recommended Driving Section
From Kusatsu Onsen up to Mt. Shirane, the road climbs through forests and volcanic areas.
The best views are between Manza Junction and the Highest Point of National Roads.
On the Nagano side, you can see lakes and forests in Shiga Highlands.
It is a great area for driving and taking pictures.
Road Conditions & Safety
The whole road is paved and well-maintained.
The lanes are wide, but there are many curves and steep slopes.
Please drive slowly, especially when going downhill.
In some areas near Mt. Shirane, you must stay in your car due to volcanic activity.
The road is closed in winter (from November to late April).
Places to Visit
- Highest Point of National Roads (2,172m): Great photo spot with a stone sign and viewing area.
- Yugama Crater Lake (entry may be restricted): A green volcanic lake near Mt. Shirane.
- Yokoteyama Drive-in: A rest area at 2,300m with food and great views.
Local Food
In Kusatsu Onsen, try hot spring steamed buns and onsen-boiled eggs.
In Shiga Highlands, the “Nozoki Bakery” near Yokoteyama is famous.
Soft serve ice cream made with local milk is also popular.

Best Season & Weather
The best time is May to October.
In May, you may see snow walls along the road.
July and August are cool and good for flowers and green views.
October is famous for autumn leaves.
Even in summer, it can be cold, so bring a jacket or long sleeves.
