This article introduces the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, a scenic touring route connecting Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari in Ehime Prefecture.
The total length is approximately 70 km, and the route links a chain of islands across the Seto Inland Sea with spectacular bridges.
Often praised as “the most beautiful cycling road in the world”, it also offers a rewarding experience for motorcycle riders, combining freedom and scenic variety.
Recommended Riding Section
The best section is between Ikuchijima (Ikuchi Island) and Oshima (Ōshima Island).
The view from Tatara Bridge is stunning, and the open road along the coastline offers both exhilaration and serenity.
Traffic is generally light, especially on weekdays, allowing for relaxed cruising.
Road Conditions & Safety Tips
The roads are wide and well-paved throughout the route.
However, cyclists and pedestrians frequently use some sections, especially on the bridges, so riders should stay alert.
Speed limits are mostly 40–50 km/h. Watch out for strong crosswinds on the bridges.
