Route Overview
Sasagawa Nagare is a scenic 11 km stretch of coastal road located in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture. It’s part of National Route 345 and offers stunning views of the Sea of Japan, with dramatic rock formations and clear blue waters. The name comes from the nearby fast-flowing Sasagawa River.
This road is a popular touring route, known for its beautiful blend of ocean and rugged coastline.
Recommended Driving Section
The section from around Kuwagawa Station to Imagawa Village is especially recommended. You can enjoy a winding, exciting route with the Sea of Japan on your right and lush mountains on your left.
There are many viewpoints and access points to the beach along the way.
Road Conditions and Safety
- Fully paved and mostly two-lane road
- Some curves and blind corners require careful driving
- Be cautious on windy or stormy days, as waves can splash onto the road
- Open year-round, but snow and ice are possible in winter—winter tires are necessary

Sample Touring Plan
Day Trip (from Niigata City)
Niigata → Murakami → Sasagawa Nagare → Kuwagawa Station & Roadside stop → Imagawa turnaround → Seafood lunch in Murakami → Return to Niigata (about 5–6 hours)
Overnight Trip
After driving Sasagawa Nagare, stay in Murakami or Senami Onsen. On the next day, continue riding to Sanpoku area or into Yamagata Prefecture.
