National Route 299 crosses Mugikusa Pass, which connects Chino City and Sakuho Town in Nagano Prefecture. With an elevation of 2,127 meters, it is the second-highest national road in Japan. It’s also known as the “Marchen Highway” and offers beautiful views of birch forests and highland scenery.
Recommended Driving Section
The route from Chino to Sakuho is especially scenic. You’ll drive through white birch forests and open highlands. In summer, it’s cool and refreshing. In autumn, the larch trees turn golden, especially around Shirakoma Pond, a great spot for a short walk.
Road Conditions & Safety Info

The entire road is paved and suitable for normal cars. However, it has many sharp curves and steep slopes. Some areas are narrow, so drive carefully. Due to high elevation, temperatures can drop suddenly. The road is closed in winter (from around November to April).

- Shirakoma Pond: A peaceful lake surrounded by forest, about 15 minutes on foot from the parking lot.
- Yachiho Highland Nature Park: Great for forest walks and wildflowers.
- Marchen Highway Viewpoint: Offers wide views of surrounding mountains.

In Chino and Sakuho areas, you can enjoy Shinshu soba noodles. Highland cafes offer hearty dishes like hamburg steak and curry. Roadside stations sell fresh vegetables grown in the highlands.

Best Season & Weather

Best time to visit is from June to October. Summer is cool and perfect for a scenic escape. In early October, the golden autumn leaves are stunning. Even in summer, it can be chilly, so bring a jacket.
