Route Overview
National Route 252 crosses the Echigo Mountains, connecting Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture and Tadami Town in Fukushima Prefecture over a distance of about 33 km. Known for its rugged terrain and heavy snowfall, this mountain route follows the Tadami River through deep valleys and untouched nature, giving it a remote and wild atmosphere.
Recommended Section
The full stretch between Hirokami (Uonuma) and central Tadami Town is recommended.
As you follow the Tadami River, you’ll pass scenic bridges, dam lakes, and dramatic gorges. The autumn foliage season is especially breathtaking.

- Fully paved, with moderate road width.
- Winding curves and elevation changes—drive cautiously on blind corners.
- Closed during winter (mid-November to mid-May) due to heavy snow.
- Road surface is generally good, but be careful in rain and watch for falling rocks.
