Route102 (Oirase Gorge)

National Route 102 runs through Aomori Prefecture, connecting Towada City to Kuroishi City. The most famous part is the Oirase Stream section, about 14 km from Nenokuchi (on Lake Towada) to Yakeyama. This scenic road runs right beside the stream, offering close-up views of waterfalls and lush nature. It’s especially popular with riders and tourists during the fresh green season and autumn foliage.

Recommended Riding Section

Nenokuchi → Yakeyama (Approx. 14 km)
This is a peaceful and scenic ride along the stream. You’ll pass waterfalls, mossy rocks, and crystal-clear water. In autumn, the road becomes a tunnel of vibrant red and yellow leaves. Ride slowly and enjoy the natural beauty.

Road Conditions & Safety Tips

  • Fully paved road with some narrow sections.
  • Shared with pedestrians and cyclists — caution required.
  • Heavy traffic during the fall foliage season. Parked cars may reduce visibility.
  • Winter (Dec–Mar) brings snow and ice, making riding difficult.

Points of Interest

Choshi Otaki Waterfall – The largest waterfall along the stream, visible from the roadside.
Ashura no Nagare – A picturesque rapid, perfect for photos.
Ishigedo Rest Area – Small stop with restrooms and a shop. Good for snacks and a break.
