Ougon Road

Route Overview

Ogon Road is a stunning coastal drive in Hokkaido, connecting Erimo Town and Hiroo Town along Route Hokkaido Prefectural Road 34 (Erimo Park Line). The total length is about 60 km.

The road cuts through steep cliffs along the Pacific Ocean and is known for its high construction cost due to the harsh terrain. Because of this, it earned the nickname “Ogon Road” – meaning “golden road” – as if it were paved with gold.

Recommended Drive Section

Hiroo → Cape Erimo (approx. 60 km)

This thrilling section winds between cliffs and the ocean, featuring many tunnels and curves. On clear days, the contrast between the blue sea and rocky shoreline is breathtaking. The sunset views are especially dramatic.
