The Okutadami Jukai Line is a scenic mountain road that connects Uonuma City in Niigata Prefecture to Hinoemata Village in Fukushima Prefecture. It is part of National Route 352 and stretches for about 60 km. The route offers spectacular views of Okutadami Lake, untouched beech forests, and rugged mountainous landscapes, creating a true sense of remote adventure.
Often called “Japan’s most extreme national road,” it is narrow and winding, but the journey rewards you with breathtaking nature and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Okutadami Dam → Miike (御池)
This section takes you along the lakeshore of Okutadami and into deep mountain valleys. It’s especially beautiful during the fresh green season in early summer and the colorful autumn foliage.
Road Conditions & Safety

- Fully paved, but extremely narrow in many places (difficult for two vehicles to pass)
- Many blind corners and tight curves — drive with caution
- Watch out for wet pavement, fallen leaves, and moss
- Poor or no cell phone reception in most areas
- Closed in winter (early November to mid-June)
