Route Overview
Located in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, the Oku-Biwako Parkway is an approximately 18.8 km one-way touring route. This scenic road runs along the northern tip of Lake Biwa, offering stunning lake views throughout. It’s known for cherry blossoms in spring and vivid foliage in autumn, making it one of the most enjoyable riding roads in the Kansai region.
Recommended Section
The entire route flows smoothly as a one-way road (south to north), but the stretch leading to the Tsuzuraozaki Observatory is especially recommended. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of Lake Biwa and Chikubu Island, as well as a series of thrilling hairpin curves that are perfect for motorcycles.
Road Conditions and Safety Tips
The road width averages 5–6 meters and is generally well-paved. However, fallen leaves and branches may be present, especially in autumn, so caution is advised. Watch out for pedestrians near popular viewpoints. Note that the road is closed during the winter months (mid-December to mid-March) due to snow.

Fees and Rental Info
The Oku-Biwako Parkway is completely free to use. Motorcycle rentals (125cc and up) are available near Nagahama Station or Maibara Station for around ¥5,000 per day (reservation required).
Best Season and Climate
The best seasons are early April for cherry blossoms and late October to mid-November for autumn leaves. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers cooling lake breezes, and autumn offers vivid views. The road is closed during snowy winters.

Benches and restrooms are available at the observatory. After descending, you’ll find great dining options at Makino Highlands or Ajikama-no-Sato, where you can enjoy local delicacies.

Access
The southern starting point is about 10 minutes by bike from JR Nagahara Station. By car, it’s about 1.5 hours from Nagoya or 2 hours from Osaka. Bike rentals are available near Nagahama or Maibara Stations (reservation required).
