North Pacific Seaside Line

The North Pacific Seaside Line is a scenic coastal route stretching approximately 140 km from Kushiro to Nemuro in eastern Hokkaido. This route combines National Route 44, Route 142, and local roads along the Pacific Ocean. As the name suggests, it runs along dramatic cliffs and open coastlines, offering a wild and unique landscape unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Kushiro → Akkeshi → Kiritappu → Hamanaka → Nemuro (Approx. 140 km)

This stretch offers continuous views of natural beauty, including Akkeshi Bay, the cliffs of Kiritappu Cape, vast wetlands, and the expansive Nemuro coastline. The section between Kiritappu and Nemuro is especially enjoyable with light traffic and smooth riding.

Road Conditions & Safety Tips

  • Fully paved and generally in good condition.
  • Fog is common, especially in early mornings and evenings. Drive carefully.
  • Watch for wildlife such as deer and foxes.
  • In winter, icy roads and snowstorms may lead to closures—check conditions in advance.
