Route Overview
Nichinan Kaigan Road Park is a scenic coastal drive stretching about 30 km along the southeastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, from Miyazaki City to Nichinan City. The route runs alongside the Pacific Ocean and offers stunning ocean views. It is part of National Route 220 and is open year-round with no tolls.
Highlights and Attractions
The road passes through dramatic coastal cliffs and inlets, featuring attractions like the Phoenix palm-lined road, Aoshima, and Horikiri Pass. From Horikiri Pass, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the sea and the unique rock formations called “Oni no Sentakuita” (Devil’s Washboard). On clear days, the horizon seems endless.
Road Conditions and Safety
The entire route is well-paved and relatively wide, making it easy to drive or ride. It includes some curves, but the road has good visibility and is suitable even for beginners. Rest areas and roadside stations are available for safe stops and scenic breaks. Night driving requires caution due to limited street lighting.

The area offers fresh seafood bowls and Ise-ebi (spiny lobster) dishes. Around Aoshima and the roadside stations, you can try local sweets like mango soft-serve and hyuganatsu citrus juice. In Nichinan City, don’t miss specialties like “Nichinan-dore Kaisendon” (fresh seafood rice bowls) and chicken nanban.
Access and Parking
About 15–20 minutes by car from Miyazaki IC on the Miyazaki Expressway to Horikiri Pass. Free parking is available at viewpoints and major attractions along the road. Spaces accommodate large vehicles and motorcycles.
Best Season
The road is open year-round. Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) offer mild weather and clear views. Summer is popular for its tropical scenery and beach access. Winter remains mild, with little concern for snow or icy roads.
