Nagano pref route 20 (Kaida-Mitake-Fukushima Line)

Route Overview

Nagano’s Prefectural Route 20, also known as the Kaidakogen-Fukushima Line, runs through the scenic Kaidakogen Highlands in the Kiso region.
This route is famous for offering majestic views of Mt. Ontake (elevation 3,067 m), one of Japan’s iconic standalone peaks.
Due to its location at a climatic boundary, the mountain often hides behind clouds, earning a reputation as a “shy mountain.”
Still, on clear days, it appears in full glory — especially from the Ontake Viewpoint along this road.

Recommended Section

The most scenic portion stretches from central Kaidakogen to the Ontake Viewpoint area.
This segment winds gently through fields and birch forests, with stunning views of Mt. Ontake emerging on the horizon when weather permits.
Clear mornings in autumn or sunny winter days provide the best chances to see the mountain.

Road Conditions & Safety

The road is generally well-paved and moderately wide.
However, due to the high elevation, riders should be cautious of fog and potential frost, especially in the early morning or after rain.
Traffic is light, making for a pleasant ride, but wild animals may occasionally cross the road.
