Route Overview
Myogi Mountain Road, officially Gunma Prefectural Route 196, is a scenic mountain route about 10 km long that runs along the southern base of Mount Myogi. Known as one of Japan’s three most dramatic rocky landscapes, the road offers thrilling curves and close-up views of jagged peaks—perfect for a dynamic ride through nature.

Road Conditions and Safety
- Fully paved, with some narrow sections and many sharp turns.
- Drive slowly and carefully, especially in rainy weather or areas with falling rocks.
- Closed in winter (roughly from December to March) due to snow and ice.
Scenic Stops
- Nakano-take Shrine & Daikokuten Statue: A giant statue of Daikoku and the trailhead for Mt. Myogi hikes.
- Myogi Shrine: A historic shrine halfway up the mountain, known for its steep stone steps and intricate wood carvings.
- Sakura-no-Sato Park: A vast park with over 5,000 cherry trees blooming in spring.
Local Food
At roadside shops and the “Michi-no-Eki Myogi” rest stop, you can enjoy set meals using local vegetables and dishes featuring Myogi’s famous konnyaku (yam cake).

- Summer is mild and pleasant, but mornings and evenings can be cool due to elevation.
