Route Overview
Pearl Road (Prefectural Route 128) is a scenic road that connects Toba City and Shima City in Mie Prefecture. It is about 23 km long and runs along the beautiful coastline of the Ise-Shima area.
The name “Pearl Road” comes from the famous pearl farming in Toba. While riding, you can enjoy the view of the sea, sky, and many small islands. It feels like driving through a postcard.
Recommended Route
The best section is from Toba Observatory to Aso-no-Ura Bridge.
This part has many curves and small hills, making the ride fun and exciting.
On clear days, you can see far out into the Pacific Ocean and the islands of Shima. It’s a great place to take photos.
Road Condition & Safety
- The whole road is paved and in good condition.
- It has two lanes and is wide enough for cars and bikes.
- During holidays or summer, there may be more traffic.
- Some people stop to enjoy the view, so be careful near viewpoints.
Sightseeing Spots
- Toba Observatory: A free viewing spot with a café and souvenir shop.
- Aso-no-Ura Bridge: A large bridge with great ocean views.
- Mikimoto Pearl Island (Toba): Learn about pearl history and see a diver show.
- Shima Marine Land (closed, but still remembered by many visitors).

- Enjoy fresh seafood like spiny lobster, oysters, abalone, and turban shells in Toba and Shima.
- The café at Toba Observatory serves soft ice cream and a local drink called Pearl Soda.
Fees & Access
- Pearl Road is free to drive on.
- The nearest station is Kintetsu Toba Station. From there, rent a car or bike.
- You can also visit Ise Shrine nearby and make it a part of your trip.
Best Season & Weather
- April to November is the best time.
- May and October have clear skies and comfortable weather.
- Summer is hot, so bring sun protection.
- In winter, it’s cold but there is usually no snow.
