Kunibiki kaigan road

Route Overview

This article introduces the touring route along the Kunibiki Coastal Road, connecting Izumo City and Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture.
The total distance is about 40 km, offering stunning views of the Sea of Japan, Lake Shinji, and iconic locations tied to Japanese mythology.
The road blends scenic coastlines with cultural heritage, including spots like Inasa Beach and Izumo Taisha Shrine.

Recommended Riding Section

We especially recommend the route from Izumo Taisha Shrine to Hinomisaki, then along the coast toward Matsue.
Near Hinomisaki Lighthouse, you’ll find dramatic cliffs and panoramic ocean views—perfect for sunset photos.
The coastal road features a good mix of curves and straightaways, with light traffic on weekdays.

Road Conditions and Safety Tips

The road is about 6 meters wide, generally well-paved and maintained.
However, there are narrow areas, blind curves, and places where strong sea winds can affect riding.
Be cautious of slippery conditions in spring and fall, and prepare warm gear for cooler coastal temperatures.
