Route Overview
The Kirifuri Kogen Road is a scenic mountain drive in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. It stretches for about 16 kilometers and connects the center of Nikko to the Kirifuri Highlands. It is part of Tochigi Prefectural Route 169. This route offers beautiful mountain views, sharp curves, and a peaceful driving experience, especially popular in the autumn season for fall foliage.
Recommended Section
Nikko City to Roppōzawa Bridge and Ozasa Farm is the most scenic part. The road climbs steeply with many curves, and the view from Roppōzawa Bridge is stunning. On a clear day, you can see the Kanto Plain. After that, a stop at Ozasa Farm is perfect for rest and local food.
Road Conditions and Safety
The entire road is paved and has two lanes. The surface is in good condition. There are many curves, so drive slowly and carefully. Fog is common, especially in the morning and evening. The road is closed during winter, usually from December to April.
Points of Interest
- Roppōzawa Bridge: A high bridge with amazing views. Great spot for photos, especially in autumn.
- Ozasa Farm: A local farm with animals, fresh soft serve ice cream, and lamb BBQ (Jingisukan).
- Kirifuri Falls: A short walk from the parking area leads to a famous waterfall.
Local Food
Try grilled lamb (Jingisukan) at Ozasa Farm. The soft serve ice cream made with fresh local milk is also popular. In central Nikko, you can enjoy yuba dishes (tofu skin), soba noodles, and sweets.
Access and Fees
The road is free to use. From the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road, take the Imaichi IC exit. It takes about 20 minutes by car. You can also reach the area from Nikko Station, but a car or motorcycle is recommended.

- Spring (late April to May): Fresh greenery and some mountain cherry blossoms
- Summer: Cool temperatures and clear skies
- Autumn (mid-October to early November): Beautiful fall colors
- Winter: Closed due to snow
