Route Overview

The Kanpuzan Panorama Line is a scenic driving and touring route that circles the summit of Mount Kanpuzan in Oga City, Akita Prefecture. With an elevation of 355 meters, the road offers 360-degree panoramic views. On clear days, you can see the Oga Peninsula, Hachirogata Lagoon, Mt. Chokai, and even the Sea of Japan.

Though the route is only about 10 km long, it delivers an incredibly dense and unforgettable scenic experience — a true gem among Japan’s panoramic roads.

Rotating Observatory → Southern Hillside → Gentle Northern Slope

  • Start at the Kanpuzan Rotating Observatory, where the view is spectacular.
  • The winding road descends through open grasslands, offering a refreshing ride.

Road Conditions & Safety

  • Fully paved and generally easy to drive.
  • Some narrow sections — be cautious of oncoming vehicles.
  • Watch for hikers and tour buses in some areas.
  • Closed in winter (usually from December to March) due to snow.

  • Kanpuzan Rotating Observatory: A rotating restaurant with panoramic views — you may even spot Mt. Chokai on clear days.
  • Oga Tourist Information Center (near the Namahage Museum): Great for collecting area travel tips.
  • Connects well with the Namahage Line, making it easy to plan a full-day ride on the peninsula.

  • Try Oga’s specialties like stone-boiled seafood, Hatahata (sandfish) sushi, and shottsuru hot pot.
  • The soft serve ice cream at the observatory is also a favorite treat — rich and refreshing.

Best Season & Climate

  • Mid-April to early November is the open season.
  • May–June (fresh greenery) and October (autumn colors) are especially scenic.
  • Summer is cool and comfortable for riding.
