Kamikochi–Norikura forest road

Route Overview

The Kamikōchi Norikura Forest Road (officially “Nagawa-Azumino Line”) is a scenic mountain road stretching about 35.1 km from Nagawa Onsen (Kurokawado) in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture to Azumi (Nakanoyu).
The road is divided into three sections:

  • Section A: Nagawa Onsen to Norikura Kōgen (~15.3 km)
  • Section B: Norikura Kōgen to Shirahone Onsen (~6.7 km)
  • Section C: Shirahone Onsen to Nakanoyu (~13.1 km)

Note: Section C is currently closed due to a collapsed bridge caused by an avalanche.
Since 2008, the road has been toll-free, and no payment is required to drive it.

Recommended Route Section

Sections A and B are open and offer a beautiful mountain drive with panoramic views of Mt. Norikura and the surrounding valleys.
The area is especially breathtaking during the autumn foliage season (mid to late October).
Some parts of the road are narrow and winding, so it’s best to drive slowly and enjoy the scenery.

Road Conditions & Safety

The entire road is paved, with many tunnels, steep slopes, and sharp curves, typical of a mountain route.
While Sections A and B are passable, Section C remains closed due to bridge damage.
There are areas prone to falling rocks, and it’s advised to avoid driving during heavy rain or at night.
The road is completely closed during winter (November to April) due to snow and ice.
