Route Overview

The Kaikyō Line (National Route 339) stretches approximately 67 km across the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, connecting the coastal town of Minmaya in Imabetsu to Kodomari, Nakasato, and Goshogawara.
This scenic coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Tsugaru Strait and the Sea of Japan. One of its most famous parts is the “Tatsudomari Line,” between Cape Tappi and Kodomari, known for its steep cliffs, winding curves, and stunning ocean views.

Recommended Driving Section

Minmaya → Cape Tappi → Kodomari → Nakasato → Goshogawara (Approx. 67 km)
The route from Minmaya to Cape Tappi features sharp curves along rugged cliffs.
From Cape Tappi to Kodomari, the Tatsudomari Line offers dramatic switchbacks and views of Hokkaido on clear days.
From Kodomari to Goshogawara, the road becomes flatter and passes through peaceful rural landscapes.

Road Conditions & Safety

  • Fully paved throughout
  • The Tatsudomari section is narrow, with steep slopes and sharp curves
  • Closed in winter (usually from early November to late April) due to snow
  • Summer fog can reduce visibility

  • Summer: Cool and clear along the coast
  • Autumn: Colorful foliage along the inland hills
  • Closed in winter due to snow (especially Tatsudomari Line)
