Iya Valley Road

Route Overview

The Iya Valley Road refers to a series of scenic mountain routes in Miyoshi City, western Tokushima Prefecture. It includes segments of National Route 32, Prefectural Route 32, Route 45, and the infamous National Route 439.
This remote area—often called one of Japan’s “last unexplored regions”—offers dramatic landscapes, including deep ravines, cliffside roads, vine bridges, and traditional mountain villages.

Recommended Riding Section

The best section starts from Ōboke Station, continuing through Iya Gorge to Oku-Iya.
The winding roads near the “Peeing Boy” statue offer breathtaking views and a thrilling ride.
Further along, you’ll encounter cultural gems like the Kazurabashi Vine Bridge and the Ochiai village—a historical hamlet nestled deep in the mountains.

Road Conditions & Safety

Road width varies; many stretches are narrow and challenging for passing.
Route 439 (“Kokudō Yokusan” or “Death Route”) is especially notorious for its tight turns, steep slopes, loose gravel, and lack of guardrails.
Passable on large motorcycles, but recommended for experienced riders only.
Note: Roads may be closed during winter due to snow and ice. Check conditions beforehand.
