Ikitsuki Island Sunset Way

Route Overview

Sunset Way is a scenic coastal road on Ikitsuki Island, part of Hirado City in Nagasaki Prefecture. Although officially designated as Prefectural Route 42, it is popularly known as “Sunset Way” thanks to the stunning sunsets seen along the route.

Stretching about 8 km, this road offers one of Kyushu’s best ocean views, with dramatic cliffs, deep blue seas, and wide open skies.

Ikitsuki Bridge → Ōbaé Lighthouse

  • The scenic views begin immediately after crossing Ikitsuki Bridge.
  • The road winds along the seaside cliffs with fantastic open views.
  • At the end of the route, Ōbaé Lighthouse offers a panoramic lookout over the Japan Sea and Ikitsuki Island.

Road Condition & Safety

  • Fully paved with good road surface.
  • Some curves, but mostly open and easy to drive.
  • Be careful on windy days — strong crosswinds can affect handling.
  • Limited street lighting at night — daytime riding is best.

  • Ikitsuki Bridge: A striking arch bridge connecting the mainland to Ikitsuki Island.
  • Ōbaé Lighthouse: Located at the island’s northern tip, perfect for sunset views.

  • Best time to enjoy the sunsets is March to November.
  • Summer brings cool ocean breezes – great for touring.
  • In winter, wind and wet road conditions require extra caution.
