The Ibukiyama Driveway is a scenic toll road stretching about 17 km from Maibara City in Shiga Prefecture up to the 9th Station near the summit of Mount Ibuki.
It climbs rapidly from the mountain’s lower slopes to around 1,260 meters above sea level, with an elevation gain of over 1,000 meters.
Along the way, you can enjoy dynamic views of Lake Biwa, the Ibuki mountain range, and even the distant Japanese Alps on a clear day.
At the end of the road, the Sky Terrace parking area offers access to a well-maintained hiking trail leading to the summit (1,377 m), which takes about 40 minutes on foot.
Recommended Section
After passing the toll gate, the road first winds through a forested area.
From the mid-point onward, the view gradually opens up, revealing sweeping panoramas.
Especially past the 1,000-meter elevation mark, a series of curves unfolds breathtaking views of the mountains and sky.
Near the summit, the road offers stunning overlooks of Lake Biwa that are perfect for photo stops.
Road Conditions & Safety

The entire road is fully paved and well maintained, offering a smooth ride for both cars and motorcycles.
It is relatively wide and comfortable to drive, but drivers should be cautious of tight curves, especially when descending.
Due to the high elevation, the weather can change quickly—fog and strong winds are not uncommon.
The road is closed from December to late April due to snow.
Note: Motorcycles under 125cc and bicycles are not allowed. Motorcycles 126cc and over are permitted.
