Route Overview
Hokkaido’s Route 950 runs along the Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido. This approximately 18 km stretch of straight road crosses one of Japan’s narrowest peninsulas. With the sea and wetlands flanking both sides, riding here feels like you’re gliding over the ocean.
Wildlife such as Ezo deer and migratory birds can be seen along the way, and the area is known for its unique natural scenery, including the ghostly “Todowara” — a field of withered fir trees.
Recommended Riding Section
The best section is from the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center to the Todowara trail entrance. This open and breezy road, surrounded by sea and marshland, offers a refreshing ride. Early morning and late afternoon often bring magical light and peaceful views.
Road Conditions & Safety
The road is mostly well-paved and flat, making it easy to ride. However, due to its proximity to the ocean, strong crosswinds are common — extra caution is needed. Some areas are narrow, so keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.
Recommended Stopovers
- Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center: Offers exhibitions on local nature, a rest area, and a small shop. Starting point for trails to Todowara and Narawara.
- Todowara: A surreal landscape of dead fir trees. Reachable on foot or via a sightseeing tractor ride.
- Narawara: A grove of withered oak trees set in wetlands — quiet and scenic.
- Betsukai Fureai Campground: Great for camping or BBQ in nearby areas.
Local Cuisine
Seafood lovers will enjoy fresh scallops, Hokkai shrimp, and kelp-based dishes served at nearby fishing ports and local diners.
The café inside the Nature Center also offers snacks and soft-serve ice cream.
Fees & Access
Route 950 is entirely free to access.
The nearest town is Betsukai, about 2.5 hours by car from Kushiro or 1.5 hours from Nemuro.
Best Season & Weather
June to September is the best time for touring. Summers are cool and visibility is excellent.
