Hokkaido Prefectural Route 106 (Wakkanai–Teshio Line) runs along the Sea of Japan coast, connecting Wakkanai City to Teshio Town over a distance of about 68 km.
The most scenic section is the stretch between Wakkanai and Horonobe, known as the Sarobetsu Plain Route, famous for its wide-open landscapes and breathtaking views.
This route offers stunning scenery with the majestic Mt. Rishiri (Rishiri-Fuji) visible across the sea, long straight roads, vast wetlands, and fields lined with wind turbines. It’s a signature Hokkaido ride that truly feels like an adventure.
Recommended Riding Section
- Wakkanai → Cape Soya → Horonobe (Sarobetsu Plain area)
A long, straight road with the ocean on one side and open plains on the other.
As you ride through the Sarobetsu Plain, the view is nothing but sky, grasslands, and freedom.
You might even spot Ezo deer or red foxes along the roadside!
Road Conditions & Safety

- The entire route is paved and mostly flat, making it easy to ride.
- Strong crosswinds are common, especially along the coast, so ride carefully.
- In summer, watch out for bugs (like horseflies) when stopping.
- Closed to motorcycles in winter due to heavy snow and whiteouts.

- June to September is the best time to ride.
- In July, wildflowers bloom across the plains.
- In August, you may get clear views of Mt. Rishiri.
- From October onward, temperatures drop — bring warm gear.

Day Trip (from Wakkanai)

Overnight Plan
Stay overnight in Horonobe or Toyotomi, then continue south the next day toward Bifuka or Asahikawa.
