Gassan Hanagasa Line

Route Overview

The Gassan Hanagasa Line is a scenic mountain road about 17 km long, connecting Shizu Onsen in Nishikawa Town to the 8th Station of Mount Gassan. Officially designated as Yamagata Prefectural Route 114, the road is named after Yamagata’s traditional “Hanagasa Festival” and offers breathtaking views of seasonal mountain beauty.

Especially from summer to early autumn, it attracts hikers and touring riders with its alpine flowers and vibrant autumn foliage.


Recommended Drive Section

Shizu Onsen → Gassan 8th Station Parking Lot (approx. 10 km)
A winding road climbs quickly in elevation, weaving along the mountain slope. Looking back, you can enjoy views of the Gassan ridgeline and the Shonai Plain in the distance.

The 8th Station parking area is also the trailhead for climbing Mount Gassan, making it a well-known starting point for hikers.


Road Conditions & Safety

  • The entire route is fully paved and generally well-maintained, though somewhat narrow.
  • Sharp curves are frequent—keep your speed low and drive carefully.
  • Even in summer, temperatures drop with altitude—bring warm clothing, especially for mornings and evenings.
  • Closed in winter due to heavy snow (typically from late October to mid-June).

Recommended Stops

  • Shizu Onsen Village: A quiet hot spring area at the foot of Mount Gassan. Perfect for a relaxing soak after a ride.
  • Gassan Visitor Center: Useful for collecting information on trails, weather, and the local environment.
  • 8th Station Viewing Point: Just steps from the parking lot. On clear days, you can see Mount Chokai and even the Sea of Japan.

Local Food & Treats

  • Enjoy Gassan bamboo shoots and seasonal mountain vegetable dishes in Shizu or Nishikawa.
  • Soba noodles are a local specialty—try chilled “ita-soba” in summer.
  • The Michi-no-Eki Nishikawa (roadside station) offers set meals and desserts made with local ingredients.

Best time to visit: July to early October

  • Summer: Cool temperatures and blooming alpine flowers.
  • Autumn: Brilliant red and yellow foliage covering the mountainsides.
  • Closed in winter; typically reopens mid-June.
