Ehime pref route 383 (Shikoku Karst Park Traverse Line)

This article introduces the Shikoku Karst Skyline Road (Prefectural Route 383), a scenic touring route that spans Ehime and Kochi Prefectures.
Stretching about 25 km, it winds through one of Japan’s three major karst landscapes, reaching elevations over 1,000 meters.
This highland road features dramatic limestone formations, open grasslands, grazing cows, and sweeping panoramic views, offering a unique and unforgettable ride.

Recommended Section

The most scenic part is the stretch from Mezurudaira (姫鶴平) to Tengu Highland (天狗高原).
This section follows a ridge with continuous curves and wide-open views. On clear days, you can see both the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
Traffic is generally light, especially on weekdays, making it ideal for a relaxed and scenic ride.

Road Conditions & Safety

Road width ranges from 4 to 6 meters, with generally good pavement.
However, riders should watch for narrow areas, fallen rocks, and occasional low-visibility fog.
Speed limits are mostly 30–40 km/h, and free-roaming cows may appear on the road, so caution is essential.
