Bandai-Azuma Skyline

The Bandai-Azuma Skyline is a scenic mountain road in Fukushima Prefecture, stretching about 29 km from Takayu Onsen to Jododaira. Reaching an elevation of 1,622 meters, it’s selected as one of the Top 100 Roads in Japan. This dramatic route winds through the Azuma mountain range, offering panoramic views and the unique, desolate beauty of volcanic landscapes.

Recommended Driving Section

  • Takayu Onsen → Jododaira
    This section features a series of winding switchbacks that gradually open up to sweeping mountain views. The area around Tsubakuro Valley is especially scenic. From Jododaira, you can hike up Mt. Azuma-Kofuji for a short crater walk.

Road Conditions & Safety

  • Fully paved and two-lane road in excellent condition.
  • Many hairpin curves—drive carefully and at safe speeds.
  • Some areas have no stopping zones due to volcanic gas.
  • Closed during winter (from early November to early April).

Scenic Stops

  • Jododaira Rest House: Information center, snacks, and restrooms available.
  • Mt. Azuma-Kofuji: A 15-minute walk from the parking area leads to a trail around the crater.
  • Takayu Onsen: Famous for its milky-white hot springs. Day-use bathing is also available.

Local Food

  • In Fukushima City, try local specialties like Enban Gyoza (disk-shaped dumplings) and peach-based desserts.
  • Soft serve ice cream at Jododaira is a treat in the fresh mountain air.

  • Toll: Free of charge since 2023 (formerly a toll road).
  • Access: About 30 minutes by car from Fukushima Nishi IC. Connect via Takayu Onsen.

Best Season & Weather

  • Best time to visit: Mid-May to mid-October
    • Cool and clear air in summer
    • Stunning autumn colors from late September to early October
  • Since it’s at high elevation, bring warm clothing—even in summer.
