Route Overview

The Bandai-Azuma Lake Line is a scenic 13.1 km mountain road that runs between Kitashiobara Village and Inawashiro Town in Fukushima Prefecture. It is one of the “Bandai Three Lines,” along with the Bandai-Azuma Skyline and Bandai-Azuma Gold Line.

This route passes through the foothills of Mount Bandai, offering panoramic views of lakes and valleys. Along the way, you can see three beautiful lakes—Lake Hibara, Lake Onogawa, and Lake Akimoto. The road is especially popular during spring green season and autumn foliage.

Recommended Section

Nakatsugawa Valley Rest House → Sanko Paradise Parking Lot
A flowing and gentle winding road along the clear Nakatsugawa stream.
At the Sanko Paradise parking area, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Bandai and the surrounding lakes, especially on a clear day.

Road Conditions & Safety

  • Fully paved, single-lane road in each direction
  • Many curves—ride with caution, especially if you’re a beginner
  • Road conditions are generally good, but be aware of falling rocks or thick fog
  • Closed during winter (mid-November to mid-April)

Recommended Stops

  • Nakatsugawa Valley: A famous spot for autumn colors. You can walk along a nature trail beside the river.
  • Sanko Paradise Parking Lot: A great photo spot with wide lake and mountain views.
  • Urabandai Product Center: A souvenir shop offering local specialties and light meals.

Local Cuisine

  • Try Yamashio Ramen (made with mineral-rich mountain salt) and soba noodles
  • Local set meals using fresh highland vegetables are also popular
  • Soft serve ice cream made with regional ingredients is a treat

  • Nearest IC: About 30 minutes by car from Inawashiro-Bandai Kogen IC on the Ban-etsu Expressway

Best Season

  • Open from May to early November
  • Lush green in early summer and vivid red/yellow leaves in mid-October
  • Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly due to high elevation
