Aso Panorama Line

The Aso Panorama Line is a scenic drive in Kumamoto Prefecture, running around Mount Aso.
It includes three main roads: the North, South, and West approach roads.
These routes take you through wide grasslands and up toward the active crater of Mt. Aso.
With big changes in elevation and beautiful views, it’s a popular spot for driving and motorbike touring.

Recommended Driving Section

The North Route is especially scenic.
As you climb the winding road, you’ll see the wide green plains and the peaks of Mt. Aso.
There are view spots along the way where you can stop and take photos.
The South Route is also relaxing, with gentle curves and greenery all around.

Road Conditions & Safety

All roads are fully paved and generally wide.
It’s easy to drive, but be careful near the crater, as access may be restricted due to volcanic activity.
Fog is common, and strong winds can occur at higher points.
In winter, the roads may be closed due to snow or ice.

Places to Stop

  • Kusasenri: A large grassland near the crater, great for walking or horseback riding
  • Aso Volcano Museum: Learn about the volcano and local nature
  • Mt. Aso Crater: See the steaming crater up close (access depends on volcanic conditions)
  • Aso Shrine: A historic site worth visiting nearby

Food & Local Delights

You can try local dishes like Akaushi beef rice bowls and Takana-meshi (mustard leaf rice).
Don’t miss soft serve ice cream and milk puddings made from fresh Aso milk.

Toll & Access

  • Toll: Free
  • Access: About 1–1.5 hours by car from Kumamoto IC on the Kyushu Expressway
  • Parking available at most viewing areas (some may charge a fee)

Note: Parts of the road may be closed due to weather or volcano alerts.
Please check the latest road conditions before your trip.

Best Season & Weather

The best time to visit is spring to autumn.
In summer, the grass is green and refreshing.
In autumn, silver grass waves in the wind, creating a beautiful scene.
Since the elevation is high, it’s cooler even in summer—great for escaping the heat.
Mornings to early afternoons are best, as fog often appears later in the day.
