Arashiyama–Takao parkway

Route Overview

The Arashiyama–Takao Parkway is a toll road in Kyoto City.
It connects the popular tourist area Arashiyama with the nature-rich area Takao.
The total length is about 10.7 km.
The road goes through forests, and there are spots with great views of Kyoto City.
You can enjoy fresh green leaves in spring and colorful leaves in autumn.
It’s a beautiful road for driving in all seasons.

Note:
Bikes under 125cc and bicycles are not allowed.
However, motorcycles over 126cc are now allowed every day, including weekends and holidays, from March 2025.
Before this, bikes were not allowed on weekends. Please follow the new updated rule.

Recommended Driving Section

The best part is near the Kiyotaki area.
Tall trees line both sides of the road.
You’ll enjoy smooth curves through the forest.
Stop at the Hozukyo Viewpoint for a great photo and a break.

Road Conditions & Safety Info

The road is fully paved and well-maintained.
It has two lanes, one each way, but some parts are narrow.
There are many curves, so be careful not to drive too fast.
The road is closed at night and sometimes in winter due to snow.

  • Kiyotaki River Walking Trail: Enjoy a peaceful forest walk
  • Jingo-ji Temple in Takao: Famous for autumn leaves
  • Mt. Atago Trailhead: Good for hiking lovers

Local Food

In Takao, you can try local dishes like yuba (tofu skin) and soba noodles.
In Arashiyama, many places offer matcha sweets and Kyoto-style kaiseki meals.
There are also snack shops along the road, good for a quick break.

     - Car: About 1,800 yen
     - Motorcycle: About 1,500 yen
  • Access:
     - From Kyoto City, take Route 162 to Arashiyama or Takao
     - Parking is available
  • Motorcycles are allowed

Best Season & Weather

The best time to visit is autumn (October–November) for colorful leaves.
Spring is nice with fresh greenery.
Summer is cooler than the city, so it’s good for escaping the heat.
In winter, snow may cause road closures. Check before you go.

Half-day morning plan:

  • Start from Arashiyama
  • Enter the parkway and take a break at Hozukyo Viewpoint
  • Visit Jingo-ji Temple in Takao and enjoy a soba lunch
  • Return to the city via Route 162, or continue to Shuzan Kaido for more touring
